Find out why Google says ‘Content is King’ and What that Means for Your Website’s Search Engine Optimization
In mid-March, Google released an update to their algorithm that affected the rankings of many websites, resulting in lower rankings on search results. You can imagine the uproar in the Search Engine Optimization community, but this kind of change is pretty par for the course in the arena of SEO. In fact, “change” is more common the status quo than not. Things are always changing with how people search the Internet, so consequently, Google continues to refine and get more specific in what people see after that search is conducted.
But what happened that made the March algorithm update different than the others? The answer to this question is buried within an official Tweet released from Google shortly after the algorithm update was completed. Here’s the official Google statement released via Twitter:
Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused on specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year.
As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded.
There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.
There it is. The crowning answer. Did you see it? I wrote it in blue. The answer to making your website more visible on the Internet, and getting your potential buyers to find your website organically, according to Google, is . . . drum roll, please . . . through great content. I’ve been saying this for a while now, and anybody who has talked to me for longer than a few minutes knows how passionate I am about telling your story and leveraging great content to create quality customers. But don’t take my word for it. Google has crowned “content” the king of search engine optimization.
So how do you use content to get your website in front of a lot of users? Well, if I told you that, I’d be giving away the keys to the kingdom! Content is what we do best. Content— a.k.a., a targeted marketing strategy that engages your potential customers— is our specialty. We have a saying around our office that goes, “Great stories happen to people who know how to tell them.”
You can write a blog, but it’s how you write it and the quality of the story that Google rewards with great rankings and increased visibility. You can post to social media, but it’s how you do it that gets your potential customers (and your existing ones) interested and engaged in your business. You can run an ad, but it’s where you run the ad— and in what publication you insert it in— that gets your business in front of the audience who is already looking for your product or service. It’s a smarter way to market your business, and it’s what we do best.
